How Apex250 works

Hands‑free, out‑and‑back GPS timing for eFoils (no buoys).
← Home

The format

Apex250 is a simple out‑and‑back effort designed to be consistent and hands‑free:

  1. Arm (automatic) and ride cleanly in one direction
  2. Reach 250 meters (or more) outbound
  3. Make a decisive 180° apex turn
  4. Ride back and finish near your start (finish gate detection)

Your Apex250 time is the measured time of that out‑and‑back window.

What counts as a valid run

Must have

  • A clean outbound segment to at least ~250m
  • A clear apex (≈180°) turn
  • A return to the start area and a detected finish
  • Hands‑free operation (no start/stop button)

Common invalid patterns

  • Turning before 250m
  • Wide drifting “S” turns instead of a clear apex
  • Loitering/zig‑zagging close to the start/finish
  • Not returning close enough to the start
Cheat‑resistance: Apex250 uses fixed detection rules. Riders can’t tweak GPS/timing settings in the app.

Before you ride

  • Mount your phone securely (dry bag / impact‑safe pocket).
  • Enable GPS/location permissions and use precise/high accuracy mode.
  • For best GPS quality: ride with clear sky view (avoid buildings/trees when possible).
  • Don’t touch your phone during the ride. The system is designed to be hands‑free.

After the run

  • The run is saved automatically.
  • It uploads automatically when you have a connection.
  • The public leaderboard shows each rider’s fastest run.

On the run page you can view the timed window route and (optionally) the full attempt route.

Tips for best results

  • Ride as straight as you can on the way out.
  • Make a decisive 180° turn at the apex (avoid drifting).
  • Return toward the same starting point.
  • Avoid slow zig‑zagging near the start/finish area.

Troubleshooting

No run: too slow during the turn

The app saw speed drop below the minimum during the apex.

  • Keep the carve flowing (avoid stalling mid‑turn).
  • Try a slightly wider, smoother 180° turn at speed.
  • Improve GPS quality: clear sky view, phone not buried under gear.

No finish / run doesn’t complete

  • Make sure you go far enough outbound (≥250m).
  • Return to the start area; don’t drift far downwind after the apex.
  • Reduce zig‑zagging near the start/finish.
  • If GPS is noisy, move to a more open area.
Note: GPS speed and heading can briefly jitter during tight turns. A clean, decisive out‑and‑back in open water gives the most reliable timing.

FAQ

What is Apex250?
Apex250 is a hands‑free, virtual eFoil timing format: ride 250m out, make a clear 180° turn, and return to finish near your start.
Do I need to press Start or Stop?
No. There is no start button. The app continuously watches GPS and automatically detects an attempt, the apex turn, and the return finish.
Why does it say “No run: too slow during the turn”?
This triggers when GPS speed drops below the minimum during the apex turn. Try keeping the carve flowing (no stall) and ensure the phone has a clear sky view.
What makes a run invalid?
Turning before 250m, not making a clear 180° apex, drifting around the start/finish, or not returning close enough to the start area can prevent a finish.
Does the leaderboard show my fastest run?
Yes. The public leaderboard shows each rider’s fastest time. Your rider page lists all runs with your personal best at the top.
Any tips for reliable GPS timing?
Use a secure mount, enable precise location, keep the phone uncovered (dry bag ok), and avoid riding next to tall buildings/trees that can reduce GPS quality.
